Potosí - Uyuni - Salt Flat of Uyuni - Salt Hotel - Fish Island
2 Days - 1 Night
Day 1 :: Potosí / Uyuni / Salt Flat of Uyuni / Salt Hotel

Departure from Potosí to the world’s largest salt lake. On the route to Uyuni we will appreciate lovely views of the Altiplano, Bolivia’s highland plain, and the eastern mountain ranges. We will observe llamas, vicuñas and Andean wildcats as well as local flora such as Andean grass (ichhu), yareta moss, and thola. We will pass through peasant villages such as Tica Tica, Yura and Pulacayo. The journey to Uyuni is 4 hours by 4x4 WD Land Cruiser. At Pulacayo, we will visit the abandoned mine and find traces of Bolivia’s legendary train outlaws – Robert Leroy Parker and Harry Alonzo Longabaugh (better known as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid). UYUNI: the town of Uyuni, at 220 km from Potosí, is situated high on the Altiplano at 3665 metres above sea level. In Aymara, “Uyuni” means farmyard owner. We will have lunch in Uyuni. In the afternoon, we will visit the train cemetery the resting place of many of Bolivia’s historic steam locomotives and observe Bolivia’s most important rail tracks. In the town of Colchani, we will visit the salt refinery, the iodisation plant and the ovens. We then enter the grand presence of the world’s largest salt flats with an area of more than 1200 km2. The impressive salt crust is blinding-white as the most perfect snowfield – a gigantic mirror in the rainy season. To venture across the Salar de Uyuni and to find oneself in the middle of this immense desert provokes a feeling of liberty and surrealism. The view of the salt flats at sunrise and sunset is of outstanding, colourful beauty. On the edge of the Salar we will visit the salt sea, see salt blocks, salt mounts, salt miners, salt eyes and salt handicrafts. We shall sleep in a hotel that is constructed entirely of salt blocks.

Day 2 :: Salt Hotel / Fish Island / Salt Flat of Uyuni / Potosi
Leaving the Salt Hotel to continue our journey through the immense, alien salt desert of Uyuni, once more provokes a feeling of freedom and the unreal. At 3665 metres above sea level the salt flats cover an area of 12000 km2, 1/3 the area of Belgium! The salt varies from 2 to 20 metres in depth. It is estimated that the flats contain 64000 million tons of salt. The flats also contain large reserves of lithium, magnesium, sodium and boron. Fish Island (Isla Pescado), located in the centre of the salt flats at 100 km from Uyuni affords views of the slat flats that are reminiscent of the Polar region, dominated by the colours blue and white, but with images of hills turned to one side by 45°. Fish Island is an oasis with a unique and isolated ecosystem that is populated by cacti up to 10 metres high. Photographers will find that Fish Island is one of the best sites in the world to indulge their passion. The island is so named because it has the shape of a fish. We will have a llama-meat barbecue for lunch and return to Potosí city in the afternoon. Our services end on arrival.
